Let’s make challah together❀️

Where the β€˜ch’ is pronounced like the end of β€˜Bach’ and if that’s too hard, β€˜Hah-luh’ will do.

 If you’re new to this gorgeous, egg-glazed plaited loaf served every Friday night for the Jewish Sabbath-Eve meal, you’re in the right place. And if you know it well, you’re also in the right place!

Challah is the shiny, egg-enriched plaited loaf of bread enjoyed on Shabbat (Sabbath). It is a little sweet, a little salty and so delicious with many of the dips and shmears we like to serve alongside. 
And it makes the most outstanding French toast!

It’s traditional to serve two loaves on Friday night to represent the double portion of manna which sustained Moses and the Israelites in the desert over the day of rest.

For those of you who are new to the idea of baking challah, we (at Monday Morning Cooking Club) are here to give you inspo and to help you find that challah-baker in you! Believe us when we say once you’ve made challah a couple of times it will become an easy part of your Shabbat repertoire.

The recipe can be found in our latest book, A Year of Jewish Cooking - it’s our beautiful cover shotπŸ“Έ. We will be sharing a new video on Thursday so you can see exactly how it’s doneπŸ™ŒπŸ™Œ. 

Making your own challah is a wonderful connection to Jewish heritage and tradition, something we value greatly βœ‘οΈπŸ’™πŸ₯°β€¦and it’s also bloody delicious!!! And the recipe, shared with us 20 years ago by Rebbitzin Chanie Wolff, is one that has been passed down from generation to generation; we have tweaked it slightly, made it smaller and therefore more manageable when you’re starting out. We’re so thrilled to have it in our collection.

Today I made a batch of these beauties, Honey Peanut Tuiles from A Year of Jewish Cooking.

They are absolutely bloody delicious!!
I made them for friends as I wanted something super quick (10 mins to make, 15 to bake) , easy and excellent.  They will also be a huge part of my Rosh Hashanah repertoire this year for sure but more on that next month.

My #1 choice when I need a gluten free, feed-a-crowd, seriously delicious birthday cake.

This is how we do it.

It’s one of our favourite cakes in the book, and you’ve been asking.

Cinnamon Swirl Cake from A Year of Jewish CookingπŸ™ŒπŸ™Œ

Some tips you may find useful when you make this cake (on the weekend?) πŸ’₯πŸ’₯:
The swirl mixture is thick! Mix it very well with a wooden spoon until it’s as smooth as you can get it. Using a teaspoon, dollop the mixture across the batter. And then, with a fork, swirl from edge to edge and from corner to corner. With some gusto!
Bake, sprinkle with cinnamon sugar and enjoy.
Yum!! 

(And did you know, this is a dairy-free cake, what a win!!!)

And in the Monday Morning Cooking Club family, we are really enjoying our new book which is only 3 months old! Also a baby!

Each of us have been stopped in the street many times over the past few weeks with β€˜this book is the best of all your books!!’ 

And as much as we don’t want the other 4 books to hear those comments πŸ™ŠπŸ™‰ we are thrilled because this book is really the culmination of all our earlier books. 

It’s a mouthwatering celebration of our beautiful and special Jewish community through the lens of our recipes, our stories and our traditions. The first four books and the cooks who have shared so much with us are the pillars and shoulders we stand on.

We hope most of you already have it in your kitchen, splattered with whatever you cooked last night!
