The Jewish new year is just about here.

Shana tova u metuka (a good and sweet year)
to everyone here, whether you’re Jewish or not.

We are all friends. And I want to thank each and every one of you for being here, reading what I post, sending me messages or hearts or just being here without saying anything. Thank you!

The past year has not been a good or sweet one
for Israel or our people in the diaspora.

Many of us are now praying more than usual.

Praying for peace in Israel.
Praying for each and every one of the hostages
to come home.
Praying for the safety of the IDF.

Praying for the upside-down world
to right itself.
We can only hope!

May your briskets be succulent
And your honey cakes moist.

Where were you on Sept 11, 2001?

I remember like it was yesterday. I was watching TV in bed on the night of September 11 in Sydney and suddenly there was a news flash. One of the twin towers was on fire.
And then I kept watching, not believing what was happening. The second plane. The buildings collapsing. The people jumping. The people covered in ash in the streets. The Pentagon. Flight 93. So many dead. So many heroes.

We were all glued to the TV for days and days to try and understand what happened. It was incomprehensible.

A time I will never forget.
A day that the world changed.

We must stop each and every radical Islamist group - Hamas, Hezbollah, Houthis - or this will happen again.
We must all join together to make sure it does not.

Despite the current 🥲 state of the world, Rosh Hashanah is approaching and I’m trying to focus on that for a moment 🍎🍯🐝

We’re busy planning what we’re going to be cooking etc and trying to navigate it all at a very difficult time. I thought this would put a smile on everyone’s face for a moment.

The wonderful social enterprise @print35 has created some special things to bring us some joy this year. Print 35 is a sydney based organization providing employment for people with disabilities, and they produce really great things.

Check out their website print35.com.au for some excellent ideas for the table and the kids❤️.

This is the Israeli pavilion at the Venice Biennale. It is closed.

Israeli artist Ruth Patir has taped this to the door:
‘The artist and curators of the Israeli pavilion will open the exhibition when a cease-fire and hostage release agreement is reached’.

Here’s a bit of Israeli biennale history. In 1948 Israeli Jewish painters first participated under the Erez Israel, Artisti Palestinesi pavilion sponsored by Italian Jews.
In 1950, Israel opened its own pavilion.
There are 29 countries who have their own, including Australia.

In the lead-up to this year’s biennale, there were (sadly yet unsurprisingly) calls for a boycott of the Israeli pavilion including a letter signed by over 22,000 artists and cultural workers.

Thankfully, Italy’s culture minister Sangiuliano labelled calls for boycott as ‘shameful’: ‘The Venice Biennale will always be a space of freedom, meeting and dialogue and not a space of censorship and intolerance. Culture is a bridge between people and nations, not a dividing wall.’

This is hope.

I don’t care about the political implications of where this speech is taking place, I care that thousands of Americans shouted ‘Bring them home’ and gave Hersh’s parents a standing ovation.

They are not alone.
We are not alone.
This is a humanitarian issue, not a poltiical one.
109 hostages need to come home.
And they need to come home NOW.
