What Lisa Loves About . . . Hong Kong

By Lisa GoldbergIn Lisa's Travels, What We Love About...Posted April 16, 2016

Or How Many Steamed Dumplings Can You Eat in Five Days I'm a steamed dumpling fan from way back. It started back in the days when the Flower Drum was in Little Bourke Street. Yep, way back then. My favourite of all is the ha gow (Xiā jiǎo) - the...

Sydney friends, what are you doing Wednesday night?

Talented (and lovely!) journalist and author Rachelle Unreich is launching her book, 'A Brilliant Life - My Mother’s Inspiring Story of Surviving the Holocaust'

The powerful true story of a Holocaust survivor told by her daughter - a tale that reminds us of the resilience of the soul and the ability of the heart to heal.
A mother and daughter.
Love. Loss. Wonder.
The story of a brilliant life.

How about we stand up and come together to support and celebrate those in the Jewish community who are telling the heart-wrenching and heartwarming stories and history of the Jewish people. So we can all listen with open hearts and minds to ensure that ‘never again’ is truly never again.

Booking essential - head to @sydjewishwritersfest or click on the link in my bio.

Well done Rachelle, I can’t wait to read your book👏👏👏

P.s I’ve know Rachelle for many many years and it will be a really wonderful and special event!!

It’s tough out there.
And it’s so tough here, on social media.
The unbridled antisemitism and vile anti-Israel rhetoric everywhere we look is devastating.
And yes, anti-Zionism is anti-semitism. If you don’t accept that the Jewish people have a right to their own homeland (which is what Zionism is), then you’re antisemitic.
And don’t get me started on the vandalizing and boycotting of Jewish businesses in Australia.
Like WTAF.
There’s so much hate.
I can’t believe how much hate.

And we must stand up to it!
Each and every one of us - Jewish and not Jewish - can stand up and make a difference. Now is the time. Time to be an upstander and not a bystander👊

So I’m cooking again. Soothing the soul.

This week it’s a chocolate challah pudding. Recipes that connect me to Jewish food! No recipe to share as yet, still in the testing phase.

I’m not really a praying person, but I’m praying for release of the hostages alive and safe, I’m praying for the elimination of Hamas and I’m praying for peace for the Israeli people and for the Palestinian people.

So how’s your Friday going?

Feeling overwhelmed by what’s going on in Israel/Gaza and in Sydney/Australia/the world?
You’re not alone.
I have so much I want to say.
Too much really.
Trying to distill all my thoughts into one to share with you tonight.

So, pretty much thinking of chocolate chiffon cake and Hamas. It’s a bit weird I know.
But cooking grounds me and reminds me of my heritage, my roots. A chiffon cake tells a Jewish story of tradition, family and love.

My overriding thought atm is that I can’t understand why people out there can’t see that Hamas is the ENEMY.
A barbaric, savage, medieval terrorist group intent on destroying so much.

The enemy of the Jewish people.
The enemy of the Israeli people
The enemy of the State of Israel.
The enemy of the Palestinian people.
The enemy of anyone who isn’t Hamas in the west.
And Israel is fighting the fight on behalf of all.

What can we do?
Stand with Israel.
Be strong.
Use whatever platform you have to make yourself heard.
Am Yisrael Chai.

A little message of hope.

I’ve just seen the video of the German Vice Chancellor strongly denouncing antisemitism.

During the holocaust, some thought Nazi Germany could not be beaten and that Germany could NEVER denounce antisemitism.

Yet, here we are.

So…maybe….maybe….one day, we will see Hamas (and the like) beaten, and a State of Israel living in peace with a State of Palestine by its side!?

Let’s go into the weekend with that in our hearts.

You can see the video by clicking on the link in my profile or heading here https://p.dw.com/p/4YJ6s

CHOLENT
(SLOW COOKED BEEF, BEANS + BARLEY)

Serves 4+

INGREDIENTS
140 g (heaped 1/2 cup) dried lima beans, soaked overnight in water*
60 g (1/3 cup) dried red kidney beans, soaked overnight in water*
65 g (1/3 cup) pearl barley
3 onions, chopped and fried
sweet paprika (optional)
400 g beef short rib (off the bone) or 750 g top rib on the bone
2 waxy potatoes, peeled and quartered
3 teaspoons salt
2 cups boiling water

*It is recommended, but not essential

AND ALSO
3 litre (12 cup) flameproof casserole (like a Le Creuset)
2 cup heat proof measuring jug

Start this recipe 2 days ahead.
You will need a flameproof casserole dish, at least 3 litres.
Soak the beans in plenty of tap water overnight. The next day, drain and rinse.

Preheat the oven to 130C.
Fry the onion in the oil over a medium to high heat until golden brown, about 15 minutes. Add the paprika if using and toss through for a minute. Remove the onion from the dish. Put the beef rib in the bottom of the pot. Top with one third of the onion, then one third of the beans/barley, then one third of the onion, then one third of the potato, half the top rib, one third of the beans/barley, the remaining onion, one third of the potato, the remaining beans/barley, top rib and potato.

Dissolve the salt in the boiling water and pour over all the layers in the dish. It should come to just under the top of the potatoes. Bring to the boil on the stove and then place an open brown paper bag (or baking paper) on top of the potato layer and cover with a lid.

Bake for 2 hours. Turn the oven down to 100 C and cook for a further 22 hours, checking for time to time. Add more water if it looks like it is drying out too much.

Alternatively cook at 150 C for 4.5 hours.
